Bringing her home this Christmas?
If your girl’s about to meet your family for the first time, follow our five-point guide
Here at DIVA HQ we know that bringing your girlfriend home to meet the family, especially at Christmas, can be a daunting, if not frankly terrifying task. So, we've decided to put together these five failsafe tips to guide you effortlessly through the festive period.
1. Give her the heads up
Giving your girlfriend a brief, er, summary about certain members of your family before actually meeting them is a good idea. For example, the uncle who passes wind at the dining table and pretends it was someone else, or the cousin who likes to drink a bottle of Malibu and cry hysterically about an ex-partner. It's just manners, I suppose, to give outsiders a subtle warning.
2. Hide the baby photos
No, mum. She does not need to see that photograph of me shoving a banana up my nose when I was two, or the video of me disappearing into a huge plastic Thomas the Tank Engine to emerge two minutes later with no clothes on. I am sure we all do enough as it is to class ourselves as a total embarrassment without the help of mum's favourite memories. Hide them, throw them out the window… They must not be seen. Oh, and discard that Steps CD while you're at it.
3. She's a lady
Perhaps one of the biggest concerns about bringing your girlfriend home for the holidays is that she's, well, a girl. She may be anxious too about being viewed as the interloper who turned your parents' darling daughter gay or bi. It might be a good idea to make a plan with your girlfriend to leave the house and go for a walk halfway through the evening just to get out of the house for a bit and make sure she is ok. Having a chat with a sympathetic relative and asking them to watch out for any tension and just "be on your side" can also help to take the edge off.
4. Destroy all evidence
Waxing strips, dirty underwear, used make-up wipes and hair-dye streaks in the bath. Don't leave traces of your date preparations for all to see - retain a sense of mystery. Make sure that the bathroom is a clear area. Also, put all processed food wrappers in the outside bin. I really did make that chicken and mushroom pie from scratch, honest.
5. Don't panic!
Your family loves you and only want what's best for you. If your new girlfriend makes you genuinely happy, they will pick up on that and go out of their way to make her feel welcome. Panicking will not only stress you out, but will also stress your girlfriend out. Just relax and enjoy the occasion.
