Australians have voted overwhelmingly in favour of legalising same-sex marriage in a historic non-binding poll.

Results revealed that 61.6% of people favoured allowing same-sex couples to wed, the Australian Bureau of Statistics confirmed. A staggering 79.5% of eligible voters took part in this landmark vote for equality.

Although the result has no power to change legislation, it will now be debated for amendments. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull stated that his government would aim to pass legislation in parliament by Christmas.

“[Australians] have spoken in their millions and they have voted overwhelmingly yes for marriage equality”, Turnbull said.

“They voted yes for fairness, yes for commitment, yes for love.”

The response on Twitter has been explosive with #MarriageEquality and #Australia trending worldwide.
