DIVA: What’s your name, and where in the world do you come from?

NN: My name is Natasha Negovanlis, and I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada.

What show do you star in, and which character do you play?

I am best known for playing broody lesbian vampire Carmilla in the web series and feature film of the same name, but I've also been in a number of queer-made projects including my own web series CLAIREvoyant, as well as lesbian lead films such as Freelancers Anonymous and Almost Adults.

How long have you been playing, Carmilla?

I had the pleasure of playing Carmilla for three wonderful years.

Describe Carmilla in three words.

Philosophical, romantic, and a little languid.

Describe yourself, IRL, in three words.

I always find it challenging to describe myself in only a few words! Passionate. Creative. Loyal.

Is Carmilla dating anyone? (SPOILER ALERT... if you've been living under a rock)

Carmilla has a romance with protagonist Laura for most of the series – they end up in a domestic partnership.

What are they like as a couple?

Laura is a real “do-gooder” and is feisty in an a-dork-able way! She seems like the opposite of Carmilla, but I think they work because they share the same values and love for each other.

Who was your TV crush growing up as a kid?

This is mildly embarassing, but my first “girl crush” on a fictional character was Hilary Duff as the witch Wendy in the movie Casper Meets Wendy!

What’s your favourite thing about taking part in conventions like, Clexacon?

Hearing stories from my audience and learning more about them, and seeing them make new friends and express themselves in a safe and welcoming environment.

Tell us, in a sentence, why you think magazines like DIVA are still important.

Magazines like DIVA are created by members of our community, for members of our community, which is important for increasing visibility.

Mainstream media outlets are still not inclusive enough.

Ready for more? Now, it's Natasha's Carmilla co-star and partner in crime, Elise Bauman...

DIVA: What’s your name, and where in the world do you come from?

EB: Elise Janae Bauman and I hail from Kitchener-Waterloo, which is in The Great White North, Canada.

What show do you star in, and which character do you play?

I play Laura Hollis in the webseries-turned-feature-film, Carmilla.

How long have you been playing Laura Hollis?

The webseries started back in 2014, though it feels like an eternity.

Describe your character in three words.

Scrappy, determined, hopeful.

Describe yourself, IRL, in three words.

Feisty, fierce, funny.

Is Laura dating anyone? (I think we might know the answer to this one...)
She is indeed, Laura is in a relationship with off-again-on-again vampire, Carmilla Karnstein.

What are they like?

Lovingly referred to as the "brooding lesbian vampire" by fans since Season One, Carmilla is the sultry, mysterious, vampire who rocks Laura's world upside down in the best way...

Who was your TV crush growing up as a kid?

I thought the dog from Wishbone had a very cool personality and I bet in human form we would have gotten along really well.

What’s your favourite thing about taking part in conventions like, Clexacon?

Community. Seeing people who have never been in a group of all LGBTQ+ people before, and witnessing their sense of true belonging is always amazing and very moving. I also love hearing about how people have had long-distance friendships for years and meet in person for the first time at conventions. Very cool.

Tell us, in a sentence, why you think magazines like DIVA are still important.

'Cause one queer-related article every once in a while in a mainstream magazine is not enough.

ClexaCon London takes place between 3 – November 2018 at Novotel London West.
