#Kana, LGBT loneliness and queer quizzes

What Cydney Yeates has been obsessed with this week

1. A report from the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness revealed loneliness can do more damage than smoking 15 cigs a day. And with Christmas just around the corner, the festive period can make us feel more alone than ever. Cue the Age UK man on the moon ad. But it’s not just the elderly who feel these empty bitter pangs. Surprise, surprise, it’s the LGBT community that gets hit the hardest. But how can this be flipped on its head? How can we feel less isolated? There needs to be more visible support networks in place. Maybe this is something I need to add to my New Year’s resolutions 2018 edition.

2. Over the past few weeks, Coronation Street fans have seen Rana Nazir and Kate Connor fall head-over-heels in a full-blown lesbian affair. Fans are fully invested in the secret couple and hailed their first romp as the soap’s “sexiest ever moment”. But like with any on-screen affair, their forbidden romance won’t stay under-wraps forever. In recent episodes we’ve already seen Luke Britton and cousin Michelle Connor catch the pair getting cosy.  And no doubt when the truth comes out they’ll be kicked to the curb with no happily-ever-after in sight. Because that’s always the narrative, right? Maybe I’m being a bit too cynical about the their future and Corrie bosses will surprise me with a unpredictable storyline. I won’t hold my breath though.

3. I’ve got a really lame confession to make. Ready? Every night before I turn off my bedside light and go to bed, I open up my BuzzFeed app. I trawl through the food section looking for new recipes and I read heart-breaking tales in the LGBT section. But my most guilty obsession from this ridiculous unbroken cycle is the quizzes. I live for the quizzes. I spend a painful amount of time on each question, picking each answer as if my life depended on it: “What Stranger Things character are you based on your pizza topping choices?” or :Your taste in Christmas decorations will reveal how many kids you’ll have”. You name it, I’ve probably done it. And as if these mind-blowing questionnaires couldn’t get any better, they’ve only gone and made lez and bi friendly ones: “Decorate Your Dorm Room And We'll Give You A Girlfriend To Meet At College”. Yes I’m already a year and a half out of uni, but it’s all hypothetical...
