Dyke March London is coming (31 March), and we can't think of a
better way to get in the spirit than this afternoon of totally
grrrl-powered documentaries...
For your viewing pleasure, organisers present the first ever
European screenings of:
* Dyke March. This film documents the 2002 San
Francisco Dyke March, the biggest dyke march in the world. By
filmmaker Shitou, the most noted les...bian activist in China and the first
lesbian to come out on national TV in China.
* The Lesbian Avengers Eat Fire Too. This film by
Su Friedrich documents the first year of actions by the Lesbian
Avengers, a group of bold lesbian activists founded in New York in
1992. The Lesbian Avengers avoided traditional picket lines and
petitions, and combined humour and direct action to obtain press
coverage; one of their better-known bylines is 'We Recruit'. They
were one of the key women's organisations behind the first ever
Dyke March.
* Women 50 Minutes. This film, also by Shitou,
documents a village in the small province of Guizhou, China, where
lesbians constitute a majority of the population. In the words of
Shitou: "It's amazing how few men there are in this place... and so
many of the women are gay. It's really strange." (And rather
lovely, adds DIVA, wonderingly.)
Dykeumentary Afternoon is a Dyke March London fundraiser. All
money raised will go towards funding the march: hiring
PA/generator/speakers, insurance, accessibility, banner-making
materials...so please support the event!
