An intelligent, dark tale of two queer teenagers, starring Elvis Presley's granddaughter, has caught the film buffs' attention

After five years in production, a trailer for Bradley Rust Grey's new film, Jack and Diane was finally released this week.

Juno Temple (The Dark Knight Rises) plays the lead role as Diane with Riley Keogh, granddaughter of Elvis Presley, as Jack. Ellen Page was originally cast, but had to drop out due to the lengthy production time.

The story follows the two girls as they embark on a budding relationship during their summer spent together in New York, doing all your average teenage relationship stuff; holding hands, fighting with parents and narrowly escaping death in skateboarding accidents.

But Diane's aunt Linda drops some bad news when she informs the couple that their summer romance may stay as just that, as Diane is being sent to school in France in a few weeks time. This news affects Diane badly, despite Jack's reassurances that she shouldn't stay for her sake.

The fallout from this revelation may be harder to deal with than a little heartbreak, however. Creepy animation from The Quay Brothers involving unsettling visions of teeth and hair growing around someone's insides, plus lines such as "I just wanna, like, unzip my body and put you in there," reference a much darker, more supernatural element to the film involving everyone's favourite underdog, second only to the ever-reigning vampire: werewolves.

With this eerie animation and an ethereal soundtrack courtesy of Icelandic band Múm we reckon that the lupine aspect will be a feature of the movie, despite it being unclear from the trailer how Diane morphing into a werewolf will be incorporated into the film.

The bonus factor here is: Kylie Minogue who has a cameo role and contributes to the soundtrack. A mysterious, tattooed, potential lover for Jack, she appears to be a bad influence on the girls in what I sincerely hope to not be another clichéd 'troubled lesbian' trope but instead an imaginative take on teenage sexuality.

Jack and Diane will premiere in US cinemas on 2 September; there is currenlty no UK release date.
