Gig review: The Sounds

The Swedish band kicked ass at London's Wireless festival this weekend and that was before lead singer Maja struck her 'pussy picture' pose

If you were in London over the weekend and weren't flourishing your rainbow flags then Wireless festival in Hyde Park was the place to be. Sunday was the final day, a culmination of an eclectic mix of well-known and up and coming bands. One such band was The Sounds. They've been mentioned countless times in DIVA and on the music scene so generally for me, expectations were high.

In comparison to the other acts I saw that day, Maja, (the famously bisexual lead singer) and her gents were up there with the best. Of course, they were on a smaller stage than the likes of Pulp and Grace Jones but that didn't stop them putting on a spectacle. I have to admit though, I had just downed a whole load of chips covered in curry sauce and had my ears nearly blown off by standing too near to an amp so was feeling ever so slightly fragile.

That of course did not stop me going slightly weak at the knees when Maja stepped out, beer in hand and wearing not a lot. A blonde Swede in leather hot-pants, how could I fault it? She really had thighs you could get your teeth into.  Undoubtedly, Maja did her famous squat thing, known more sexily as a 'pussy picture'. She's got attitude that girl, and I know it wasn't just me in the crowd who got very excited when she stated that she wanted to say "so many dirty things".

Of course, I didn't just gawp at Maja, or wonder where Felix (the guitarist) had got his hair cut. The music was pretty good too. I like a bit of bass on a Sunday afternoon. They all exuded that Viking charm, if there is such a thing, and even though I hadn't ever heard them before the fact that I was so, ahem, stimulated by them didn't make me feel in any way like some awkward dad who'd taken their teenage goth music-loving daughter off to see S Club 7 for the umpteenth time.

Annoyingly their set was only really 20 minutes. They obviously deserved a lot longer but even in the short time they played, those pesky Swedes got Hyde Park dancing. Well, sort of bopping. I mean, it was a Sunday after all.
