No doubt millions of Americans sat agog as Fox network, Google
Chrome and the "It gets better" project teamed up to broadcast an
in-your-face, undeniable, not going away, gay-themed advert during
this week's "Rumours" episode of Glee which runs between 8-9pm on
the major broadcast network FOX.
Sitting nicely with the two gay storylines currently running in
the hugely popular Glee, the advert demonstrates the power of the
internet using the example of how the "It gets better" project
spread from one video to become a global phenomenon.
The project, founded last year by gay US columnist Dan Savage,
is focussed on raising awareness about the risk of gay youth
suicide and contributes money to organisations like The Trevor
Project, who provide crisis and suicide prevention services to LGBT
youth.
This is not the first pro-gay ad to air on American television
but it is particularly significant as it is one of the first that
has gone uncensored and has been unambiguous in its message on
prime time television. Hats off to Fox and to Google for being
brave enough to push this important issue into the faces of
mainstream America, but it begs the question- will the U.K follow
America's lead?
