MUSIC: Iconic or Ironic?

Fanny, the first all female rock group, is fittingly the first in our series of comedy retro revisits

As one of the more mature members of the DIVA team I am going to be trawling through past music and movie clips of interest and sharing them with you from an ironic or iconic perspective. To start these weekly retro revisits I've decided to choose Fanny!

Before the Runaways, this Californian four piece took the early 70s rock scene by surprise. I first heard of them a few years ago whilst reading Dawn French's Memoirs, Dear Fatty, where she told the tale of going to see them live in some bar in Plymouth and being so blown away by their swag that she started to play bass and was going to set up her own all girl group!

Not only was their name a big deal but they also actually wrote their own songs and played as well as the dudes in the biz at the time. See what you think.  Here's a piece of vintage footage of Fanny on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1971 performing their own song You're The One. They have a fan site if you want to see more Fanny!
