Ab Fab fans will be thrilled by news of three brand-new
episodes, scheduled to air this Christmas. There's a big
disappointment in store for Eddie Monsoon, however, the character
created, written and performed by Jennifer Saunders, in the first
of three new Ab Fab episodes coming our way this Christmas.
It's not weight- or fashion-related (though weight- and
fashion-wise there are disasters). She hasn't been dropped by her
star client Lulu. It's not even that she's been passed over for the
PR's PR Person of the Year Award again. No, it's that her daughter
Saffy still isn't a lesbian. STILL!
Not wishing to give anything away, Saffy has had lesbianism wafted
in her very face and has turned her nose up at it. And Eddie is
just as gutted as she was when she first jumped on the idea of
Saffy being Sapphic back in the day. "Oh, break it to me like that,
why don't you?" she snapped when Saffron clarified that she was
actually straight. This time she actually does some rudimentary
hand movements which are supposed to indicate female mutual
masturbation. It's not sexy.
Sitting in the front room of Jennifer Saunders' West London office
(up some grotty stairs and not half as smart as you might be
expecting, though there are some brilliant blown-up Polaroids of
Eddie and Patsy looking a state), she is loving talking about the
new episodes, chortling, drinking tea, offering chocolate
digestives, calling over to someone to keep checking facts such as
June Whitfield's age, giving her dog Olive something to chew on and
then, just as quickly, taking it back from her in case she
chokes.
