Great news for fans of Jill Bennett and anyone hungering for
more LGBT television, generally. Bennett, who you may have seen in
In Her Line of Fire opposite Mariel Hemingway or in rom-coms And
Then Came Lola and Out at the Wedding, has co-created and starred
in what she's described as a "gay, sexy Cheers", an independent
sitcom called Second Shot.
Bennett plays Kat McDonald, a former professional soccer player
whose glory days are behind her. When she returns to her small Ohio
hometown for the funeral of her mentor, Kat learns she has
inherited Dot's Hole, the only gay bar in three counties. Leaving
her life and girlfriend in Miami behind, Kat comes face to face
with her past, including her first love, Allison, who is now
married to a man.
Second Shot's original premise was developed by the show's other
co-creator, Nancylee Myatt, a longtime creator and champion of LGBT
programming. As a writer and showrunner on South of Nowhere, Myatt
nurtured the teen lesbian storyline between characters Ashley and
Spencer, which spawned the famous fan mash-up "Spashley."
Others who have worked on the project have similarly impressive
credentials. Second Shot Head Writer, Dara Nai, is best known for
her work with Bennett on We're Getting Nowhere, for AfterEllen.com,
and the LOGO late-night TV show, Dara and Karman's Hit List, which
she co-created. She also wrote on eight episodes of a sitcom
starring Cedric the Entertainer.
Finally, the episodes being screened for the Film Series were
directed by the award-winning director, producer, writer, and
filmmaker Annie Price. Price's credits include segment producer for
The Ellen DeGeneres Show and executive producer on the reality
series, Real Life: The Musical for OWN.
