Gay dancer and choreographer Michael Clark returns with the world premiere of 'th' at the Tate Modern

Thu, 09 Jun 2011 14:08:37 GMT | Updated 1 years today

Working with movement, film, light and sound to create a site-specific work at the Tate's gargantuan Turbine Hall, the iconic and dazzling gay British choreographer Michael Clark has created the new performance in response to the monumental architecture of the Turbine Hall. This five-night stint of 90-minute late night shows follows from the company's residency last year where dancers professional and amateur joined together to create a mesmerizing cascade of shapes reminiscent of Hollywood movie director and choreographer Busby Berkley's complex geometric patterns.

This unique and thrilling event provided an unique opportunity for Tate Modern visitors to witness the artistic process behind Clark's choreography. We were also treated to screenings of some of his most controversial and innovative work from the 1980s and 1990s, notably 'Because we must' and 'I am Curious Orange' both works which he created in collaboration with fashion designers Bodymap, artists Leigh Bowery and Trojan as well as Mark E. Smith of The Fall.

Using the first part of the project as an opportunity to explore and experiment, Michael Clark Company has embedded last year's research into a new piece. This year Clark has again worked with long-standing collaborators Charles Atlas and Stevie Stewart.

Building on last year's success, the company once again invited members of the

public to take part in a series of weekly workshops giving non-professional dancers the chance to become a part of the artistic creation and contribute to the final performances.

The resultant piece is bound to be extraordinary and despite the steep ticket price, we highly recommend you catch this unique show.
