Misfits has returned for a third series of "Community
Payback" and if you missed it, or are still stuggling to catch up
via 4OD, or even need a revist to try and figure out some of this
warped stuff, then what better way than in your own time, with a
cup of tea and the DVD box set!
Episode 1 sees a new character donning a
Guantanamo-orange jumpsuit. Rudy (played by Joseph Gilgun, best
known as benign skinhead Woody from This Is England) gets a rude
awakening in his first few days of community service, learning that
with the keys to the locker room comes a great deal of running,
screaming, and, in some instances, killing. More pressing is just
how to keep his secret superpower, well, secret. He's a good
replacement for Robert Sheehan and the writers have made sure he
gets all the potty-mouthed sick lines that would've been afforded
Nathan were he still around. Meanwhile, the rest of the gang are
trying to adapt to life with their new superpowers, having traded
their previous ones at the close of the previous series with that
nasty super power-broker Seth.
Episode 2 Bored with the direction in which his
life is heading, especially since he's still banned from athletics,
Curtis (Nathan Stewart Jarret) decides to use his new gender-swap
power so that he can compete again (and wow, what a
transformation!). In true Misfits style, there's a complication
when Curtis falls for fellow athlete Emma, while he's training as
his female self. Curtis has to keep his true identity a secret and
his female self must fend off the advances of creepy Shaun amongst
others. Hot and hilarious gender-bending antics ensue -
period!
Episode 3 Simon (Iwan Rheon), still trying to
fulfil his destiny by becoming SuperHoodie, saves geeky comic-book
nerd Peter from being mugged. Peter is in awe of SuperHoodie - at
last he's found a real super-hero to idolise. Peter strikes up a
friendship with Simon; a friendship that soon turns into obsession
and threatens to destroy everything that Simon holds dear,
including his love for Alisha (Antonia Thomas). Finally, Simon
discovers the true sacrifices that you must make to become a real
super-hero.
Episode 4 is where it starts to get a bit
warped. An old Jewish man plans to use some of Curtis's old
super-power to go back in time and kill Hitler. But his plan goes
horribly wrong and the gang find themselves in an alternate world
where the Nazis have conquered Britain. With the Nazis growing
stronger as they force Seth to "deal" them super-powers, it's up to
Kelly and the resistance to fight back. As the Nazis close in,
Kelly and Seth find themselves drawn to each other.
Episode 5 Lauren Socha's Kelly finds herself
body-swapped into a coma victim who promptly runs off to win back
her former boyfriend, leaving Kelly helpless and trapped. Drama
ensues as Seth and the gang race to release Kelly before the
coma girl's grieving family give the word to let her die.
Episode 6 This one's a scorcher, with X-rated
action from the outset, but don't think that sex comes without
consequences for the Asbo Five. Swaggering chauvenist Rudy picks up
a nasty STD after a night of passion with one of three possible
contenders. Can he track her down before she puts his undercarriage
out of commission for good? Meanwhile, Curtis finds himself
unexpectedly up the duff. But who's the daddy?
Episode 7 Batten down the hatches, it's zombie
time! Seth and Kelly are dating now (ok then, shagging) but he is
still strangely distracted by his last girlfriend's grave. Not a
good sign, you might think, and you'd be right. Using his ability
to transfer powers between people, Seth coerces Curtis into
bringing Shannon back to life. Unfortunately, like so many of the
ressurected, she's a flesh-eating zombie and, thanks to a cat
called Mr Biggles, soon a bunch of cheerleaders are too. The gang's
headcount (anyone keeping up with how many people they've killed?)
is about to escalate.
Episode 8 Things come to a tense conclusion in
the final episode. A medium inadvertently brings back the ghosts of
everyone the gang has seen off since the first series, with some
interesting revelations, but are they benign spooks or bent on
revenge?
The box set also features Graffiti World, a
12-minute short, in which the gang encounter a graffiti artist who
has created an alternative reality, inside his art. But who's this
lovely lady he keeps captive there, and could the incurable
Lothario Rudy really be about to lose his heart?
To round it all off is Vegas Baby!, a short and
sweet webisode and a must for fans of Nathan (Robbie Sheehan) who,
armed with a new superpower and new facial hair, has got a plan to
go out in style. His target - Las Vegas. With Marnie and little
Nathan Junior in tow, Nathan plots to use his power to scam the
casinos in his own mathematically flawed way. And so, in true
Nathan style, his chips are down and he finds himself on the
run. He calls his old pal "Barry" for help and gets an
unwelcome surprise!
The sexual tension, violence, drink, drugs and dark comedy has
been ratcheted up a notch for season 3 and there's some interesting
extra characters in each episode, as ever. Especially of note is
the totally fit Melissa (Kehinde Fadipe). But the best lines come
mainly from the deadpan Kelly (Lauren Socha), including our
favorite: "What the Fock is Brunch?"
