Review: The Ones That Got Away

We take Jill Jackson's most recent album out for a spin

As we may have mentioned in our recent cover interview with singer-songwriter Jill Jackson, the former Speedway frontwoman is working on a new solo album, Getaway Driver, which (we've been told) is scheduled for release in May.

In the meantime, however, Jill's recently released a limited edition album called The Ones That Got Away, which is available through her website. Produced by Jill and James Duffin, the album features twelve of Jill's favourite tracks, some of which you may be familiar with.... plus two completely new ones.

There is a lot to enjoy in The Ones That Got Away. Jackson's country music influences are really on show; The Travelling Clown, for example, starts with some bango finger-picking and foot-stomping that could not be more country if there were chickens clucking in accompaniment. There's also a new version of Heart of Mine, from Jill's Back To Zero album, which is slower and sadder, the acoustic guitar really allowing Jill's voice to take centre-stage (mixing my metaphors a bit there).

In short, this is a solid collection of songs both upbeat and melancholy which showcase the beauty of Jackson's voice and the quality of her songwriting to date. If you like country music, you're likely to love this. Recommended.
