Following on from her success of a joint exhibition with Matthew
Stradling at Homotopia Festival in Liverpool 2011, Sadie Lee opened
her spin off show at Soho Hair salon, We Are Cuts, displaying a
small selection of stunning portraits and limited edition prints
from the series.
Featuring underground icons including David Hoyle, actress Rita
Tushingham, the queen of parties/photographer Stav Bee (pictured,
left) who hosts regular pop-up events, Matthew Stradling, Frank
Sweet and Anderrida Shurville (pictured, left) .
Looking at her paintings the first thing that struck me was her
ability to capture light, shadowing effects, her use of
dis-proportion and the eyes of each subject that stare back at you
with defiant boldness. Clothing is partial in some and semi nude in
others, which makes it an intimate encounter amidst the buzz of the
business space. Sadie makes realistic paintings of real people. Her
work is generally concerned with issues of gender, sexuality and
ageing.
Sadie uses a photo-realism technique which consists of taking and
working from an original photo of her subjects. She invites the
subjects to sit in her dramatically lit studio, and subsequently
works from a number of photos, making sketches so the final image
looks slightly disjointed. No post production software has been
applied in her work at all. Sadie is heavily influenced by Neue
Sachlichkeit painters like Otto Dix and Christian Schad from
1930s.
Go take a look and pamper yourself in the process. The exhibition
runs until mid March 2012.
