Five things we love about Will & Grace

Why the classic gay sitcom still has a special place in our hearts

Ah, Will & Grace. It took the occasional comic pot-shot at lesbians, but (most of the time) we kept our sense of humour about that. Now The Ultimate Collection DVD box set has come out and reminded us just what a great show it was.

Those of you who've watched it before (which I imagine is most of you) can skip this paragraph. Starring Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally, Will & Grace was of the most successful and beloved comedies in recent TV history. The show follows Will Truman (McCormack), a gay lawyer, and his best friend Grace Adler (Messing), a Jewish woman who runs her own interior design firm, in their problematic and unusual search for romance in New York City. By their sides helping (and hindering) are their friends Karen Walker (Mullally), a rich socialite, and Jack McFarland (Hayes), a struggling actor/singer/dancer who also has had brief careers as an acting teacher, back-up dancer, waiter, talk-show host and student nurse. The show lasted 8 seasons and won 16 Emmy awards and 83 nominations, and had some incredible guest-stars over the years including Cher, Elton John and Sandra Bernhard.

Here, then, are some of our favourite moments:

Ellen as a nun

Has Ellen ever been funnier than she is playing cheesecake-selling nun Sister Louise in this episode? Some great comic moments from a beloved lesbian icon.

'My Uncle The Car', Season 3, Episode 15

Madonna as Karen's roommate

Madonna plays Lizzy, Karen's office manager roommate and her comic timing is impeccable. I particularly love her "Cut to me" catch-phrase: "Cut to me flat on my back on his futon", etc. Brilliant.

'Dolls and Dolls', Season 5, Episode 21

Karen hits on Mira Sorvino

Leo invites his ex, played by Sorvino, to dinner, and Karen takes a shine to her. Best line: "I like you too... let's see how the evening goes." To be honest, though, any scene with Karen is on our favourites list.

'Last Ex To Brooklyn', Season 6, Episode 2

The lesbian realtors

Chloe Sevigny and Nurse Jackie's Edie Falco as lesbian power couple Dierdre and Monet? Amazing. If you haven't seen this episode, you must. Immediately.

'East Side Story', Season 6, Episode 17

Sandra Bernhard sings 'Midnight Train To Georgia'

With Will and Grace, who rather over-eggs it. They've made a (fake) offer on her expensive apartment... it's a good episode, and Sandra, playing herself, is hilarious.

'Swimming Pools... Movie Stars', Episode 3, Season 11

Why not tell us which is your favourite episode, and why?

With DVD extras including an special bonus disc with featurettes and exclusive commentary for the Finale Part 1 & 2, WILL & GRACE THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION is a must-have DVD collection for any fan of this hilarious and celebrated show.
