The first episode of Dominic Savage's new five-part series True
Love, which dealt with the dilemma faced by happily married Nick
(David Tennant) when an old flame (Vicky McClure) returned to woo
him, wasn't particularly controversial. It made slightly
uncomfortable viewing, as Nick's wife (Joanne Froggatt) waited at
home with a sad look on her lovely face, but if Lip Service has
taught us anything, it's that affairs (or the threat of them) are
the bread and butter of TV drama. And for me, at least, the outcome
of that episode came as no surprise.
Tonight's episode, however, in which unhappy teacher Holly
(Billie Piper) develops feelings for a 16-year-old student played
by Skins alumnae Kaya Scodelario (she played Effy, a main character
in Skins series 3 and 4), may ruffle a few viewer feathers. It
appears to be the only same-sex storyline in the improvised series,
so it's interesting that they've chosen to deal with such a
controversial issue here, rather than with a heterosexual pairing.
If you're interested in seeing how the subject's dealt with, the
episode is on tonight.
