Review: Spice Market London

We took our hearty appetites down to a newish restaurant in London’s Leicester Square

If you're planning to take someone special out for dinner and you're looking for a restaurant in central London, then we have a suggestion for you. Opened in February this year, Spice Market London in the W London - Leicester Square hotel is a great place to eat, in a really convenient central location. It's got a bit of street cred too, if you're swayed by such things, being the sister restaurant of the iconic Spice Market in New York's Meatpacking District. As Tina Fey would say, "I want to go to there."

The food at Spice Market London is South East Asian-inspired and really is very good. The chef has three Michelin-stars (his name is Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and he is apparently the toast of the New York restaurant scene, credited with "inventing America's answer to nouvelle cuisine".) My good friend Tom and I opted for the tasting menu so we could try a little bit of everything, and we weren't disappointed.

Among the stand-out dishes for us were Shaved Tuna with Chilli Tapioca, Asian Pear and Lime, served in a little bowl balanced beautifully atop a larger bowl of shaved ice, Char Grilled Chicken with Kumquat Lemongrass Dressing (really lovely and refreshing) and Thai Jewels and Fruits with Crushed Coconut Ice (a perfect, light dessert).  We also sampled chicken samosas with a lovely subtle green curry dipping sauce and some supremely tender beef satays served with a citrus and basil dip. The flavours were lovely and unusual; this is the place to go for something a bit different. It's also the place to go if you like someone much more knowledgable than yourself to select some really good wine for you. These dishes are capitalised in the menu with good reason; this is a genuinely memorable dining experience.

All the other elements you hope for when you go out for a meal are there, too. The staff are really helpful and know a lot about the menu. The decor is great; we were sat upstairs at a semi-circular booth which was very comfy. The place was busy but not too noisy. The low lighting made Tom look fantastic. All in all, a really fantastic night out. Recommended.
