Top 10 lesbian habitats

Of course you can find women at gay pubs and clubs but what about by daylight and sans alcohol? DIVA lets you in on few vital bird-watching tips

Laura Muldoon

1) Natural Places

Lesbians love nature and, according to Sarah Waters, are attracted to "earthy" women like Kate Middleton. (Nothing to do with her being really fit then, Sarah?) Maybe that's why lesbians always gather in places of natural beauty. Trot on down to your local pond or park and channel your inner Virginia. Who knew algae could be such a sapphic aphrodisiac?

2) Vegetarian restaurants

Following on from my "lesbians love nature" theory, apparently a lot of them don't like the idea of killing animals and eating them. Think of your local veggie place as the Cheers bar of the lesbian world, where everyone will know your name soon enough. Order the vegan option if you really want to earn some real lezzie street cred.

3) Anywhere associated with bikes

Girls on bikes are hot. Fixies, racers, BMXs, you name it, we ride it. Join a cycling group (www.girlsonbikes.net) and consider it your fast-track to finding the one to while away the summer days with on your bicycle made for two. Maybe steer clear of the "dyke on a bike" phrase though, unless you want to feel the wrath of Clare Balding.

4) Plays linked to gays

Ah plays linked to gays, I love you. However tenuous the link to the lesbian community, girls will go out and watch it. I once went to see Denise Black, in Roots at the Royal Exchange Manchester. Her link is that she was Vince from Queer As Folk UK's mother and that was all it took to draw in the girls. Also check out anything containing Maxine Peak, and there's not a lesbian I know who hasn't seen the acclaimed Children's Hour (www.thecomedytheatre.co.uk/) at some point in their lives.

5) Generally male-dominated sports teams

Girls are taking up sports that are usually dominated by men with gusto and scrumming, tackling and slogging like it's going out of fashion. Find your local women's rugby club if you are in need of  a good ruck… (www.rfu.com/WomensRugbyPortal)

6) Bookshops

Maybe it's the musty smell that draws girls in but if you prefer books to booze then this is a great alternative place to meet other ladies. Also see: discussion groups, poetry slams and earnest book readings accompanied by soya lattes. (freespace.virgin.net/gays.theword/)

7) Female comedy nights

Laughing Cows is an all-female comedy night held up and down the country (www.laughingcowscomedy.co.uk/ ) and showcases the leading talent in female comedy at the moment. With a mixture of gay and straight comics and audience members alike, this is a great safe and welcoming space and a lot of new girl crushes and great comediennes have started here. Zoe Lyons anyone? (http://www.zoelyons.co.uk/)

8)  Knitting circles

Ever wanted to legitimately sit around and goss off about your night out in the company of other craft-loving women? Join your local stitch 'n' bitch (stitchnbitch.org/Find-a-Group/index.html) group, get knitting some chunky knit cardis, and hope they'll be finished for A/W2015.

9) Lesbos

Do you ever get that sinking feeling on holiday as you slowly realise you're surrounded by burnt beer bellies and men in football shirts? The ultimate getaway for women is of course Lesbos, the birthplace of Sappho, and a modern day mecca for gay women. I've heard that on Lesbos an army of Heather Peace look-a-likes greet you from the plane and wait on you hand and foot, providing vegan treats for all. (disclaimer: this may be a lie). (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesbos )

10) Dykon Music concerts

A little similar to plays linked to gays in the way that it seems irrelevant whether the artist is gay or straight but more whether they have a small link to the community or lesbians can imagine they're gay (cf. Annie Lennox, P!nk). Also, it is completely unimportant whether they are at all talented or interesting. Check out PJ Harvey on tour if you want to see a truly talented woman magnet! Some good suggestions, I think, but I hope you're not suggesting that Heather Peace isn't talented and interesting (#10)?

Great article, but you can't seriously be suggesting in no.10 that Heather Peace isn't talented and interesting?! I can assure you that she's both. Had to register just to tell you how very irked I am at that. Grrr.

Amusing until you get to no:10. Is Laura Muldoon actually suggesting that H Peace is not talented? Perhaps leaving that comment until the very end was a wise thing! Grrr...

I take issue with no.10 and your comment re Heather Peace. Having seen two of Heather's gigs recently I can assure you she is talented! Both as a singer and as a songwriter. Some of her new songs are outstanding like 'My Way Only' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq8YdQePHEg&feature=channel_video_title . And to suggest she is not interesting is ridiculous. #justsaying

Disagree with no10 . The writer is obviously entitled to their opinion but the mag has, I believe praised Heather for both talent and character. I have seen 6 of Heather's gigs, enjoying her music and the banter with the audience. Making her, in my eyes both talented and interesting. #justsayin

Hmm, naive and immature of you to mock one of your Lip Service 'cash machines'. Heather Peace may not be a stadium star, but is talented enough for you to want her to sell your publication..... Oh and Lesvos, at its peak has some pretty sartorially-challenged, cliché-upholding visions of ghastliness! #justsaying :o)

Thank you Diva, for removing the line in no.10 about Heather Peace and Leisha Hailey. Both are very talented and interesting ladies.

Hello Heather and Leisha fans, sorry if I caused offense by suggestion no. 10. It was a flip comment made in jest and meant to be more of a comment on the lesbian tendency to flock towards Lesbian artists regardless of their musical talent than a slight upon the artists themselves. It has now been removed- peace and love! Laura.

Thanks Laura. Enjoyed the article other than that - weird choices to illustrate lack of talent or interesting personality, although I realise the perception of talent and interest can be subjective. I can't speak for Leisha, but I know Heather a little bit and she's hardworking, hugely talented, funny, down to earth and a complete sweetheart. I've seen fans go back to gigs again and again, for the music and banter (I'm one of them). It just seemed rather hypocritical of Diva to hold the opinion you stated, whilst having Heather lined up for her second cover in 6 months (I believe the first one was rather popular). I'd like to challenge you to watch this video right through and see if your opinion remains the same: http://bit.ly/jS0EIJ ;o) Anyhow, thanks for the line removal. Peace and love back atcha. Cerise.

Thank for the link Cerise, I enjoyed the video a lot, it was very moving. To be honest I haven't really listened to much HP but just heard saw a load of covers on her album and didn't feel very inspired by it. I should have done my research before mouthing off! Everyone else in the office loves her so I'm going to get on board too...Laura

Ed Jane, weighing in here - while we've certainly absolutely no desire to upset Heather or any of her fans it's worth remembering that DIVA isn't a single-voiced publication; we have opinionated columnists and writers who hold a wide range of differing views, as is the case with most publications. We work on the basis that its important to reflect this diversity within the lesbian community.

Thanks for watching it Laura, glad you liked it. Yeah the first album was put out very quickly, just Heather and a guitar, due to the increase in interest in her gigs and before she had written a full album of songs (hence the covers). But a new one will be out towards the end of this year, fully produced this time and all original songs I think, including gems like 'Better Than You'. That'll be the one to really watch out for. ;o) Jane - thank you, so noted. Also worth noting that I wouldn't have complained if the assertion had been remotely true! Perception of talent may be subjective, but 'not at all interesting' was a low blow. Love Diva, by the way - can't wait for the new issue to pop onto my iPad. :o)
