The winter is upon us bringing with it the dark, cold nights and
the frosty walks to work. Brrrr. Everyone is wrapped up in layers,
and hibernating in their warm winter coats. I love winter, but
there is one thing I miss - ink ink ink! I think now is a good time
to share some of my top five memorable tattoo designs for all of
our tattoo-deprived eyes.

One of my favourite tattoos also happens to be one of the
smallest and simplest designs. Sara Quin of Tegan
and Sara has a very small tattoo on her wrist, which is great for a
musician whose hands are always out playing the guitar. The six
lines stand for the six strings on the guitar. A great tattoo that
proves how simple can sometimes be very effective.

The Gossip wonder-woman Beth Ditto rocks a
giant sailor anchor on her left arm. The anchor symbol is popularly
known for being a
symbol of gay Pride, so when you put the anchor and Beth Ditto
together, it becomes a double bubble of queer delight!

One tattoo very popular at the moment is the minimal
black outline of a triangle. It holds different meanings
for everyone. The triangle is one of the strongest shapes in
architecture. In science, the triangle symbolises change. For
others, it is a deeply powerful feminist symbol. Used during the
Nazi holocaust to mark people who were queer, the LBGTQ community
have since reclaimed this symbol. Power to the dykes.

I could never write about tattoos without mentioning
Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon
Tattoo - one of my favourite fictional characters. Underneath her
leathers Lisbeth has a wasp tattoo on her neck, a loop around her
bicep, and on those occasions when we see her back, the famous
dragon tattoo can be seen on her left shoulder blade. Kick-ass.

Who could ever forget Shane and Carmen's first
hook-up in The L Word? The studio location combined with the
sensual music laid the foundations for what was going to be an
unforgettable sex scene, yet it was the moment when Shane revealed
Carmen's tattoo that truly made this a delicious moment in the
history of lesbian television. Scroll down for a
reminder...
