Openly-gay actress Amber Heard has publicly criticised her Hollywood peers who aren't open about their homosexuality.

The 25 year-old, who currently stars in The Rum Diary opposite Johnny Depp, said: "You can't respect yourself if you're afraid to be who you are."

She added: "It requires bravery to do something no one else around you is doing, but the risk was outweighed by the possibility of playing into this horribly detrimental lie that some in Hollywood perpetuate."

Heard publicly came out as a lesbian in December 2010.

The Pineapple Express star attended the GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) 25th anniversary bash in Los Angeles, California, with her partner Tasya van Ree.
