BBC period drama Upstairs Drama will feature a same-sex
storyline between two female characters, this year.
Speaking to press at a new season premiere screening, writer Heidi
Thomas revealed that actresses Emilia Fox and Alex Kingston will
bring the affair to life.
Speaking to the Daily Express, she said: "You'll meet Emilia first
and Sarah comes in later,"
"I really don't want to give the game away because it lets you
know things about other characters in the show ahead of time and I
think it will spoil it for the audience.
"The pair certainly bring a whiff of scandal. They've been living
abroad and now arrive in London. They try to be covert about their
life. The series is set in 1938 where life was far less sexualised.
When it gets exposed though, they find a surprising ally."
The new storyline is seen as a direct response to the success of
ITV's Downton Abbey, which has been a critical and commercial
success.
Fox will play novelist Portia, Lady Alresford, while Kingston
plays Blanche Mottershead.
The new season is expected to air here in the Spring.
