The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Projects' report,
released on Tuesday, showed that - in particular - homicide rates
have jumped 20 per cent from twenty-two in 2009 to twenty-seven in
2010.
According to the LA Times, these include an 18-year-old gay man
from Texas allegedly killed by a high-school classmate who thought
his friend was making advances toward him; a 31-year-old
transgender woman from Pennsylvania found dead with a pillowcase
around her head and a 24-year-old Florida lesbian allegedly killed
by her girlfriend's disapproving father.
Aside from from recording a greater degree of severity, the
study also reflected demographic trends in anti-gay violence.
Seventy per cent of those were minorities and 44 per cent were
transgender women. The attacks also show a higher level of
brutality, the report concludes.
