The gay community have joined forces with Stuart Andrew, MP for Pudsey, to make Leeds City Council consider the proposal, which would be a first for the area.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, they want to designate Lower Briggate, Bridge End and The Calls as the main home of the gay population.

Businesses would be invited to 'opt-in' to the scheme that is being led by local entrepreneur Terry George.

Chair of the committee, Sarah Carmody, says the move would boost the economy.

She said: "We thought if they can do it, we can do it, which is why we set up the community. Liverpool spurred us on. We want to say that we are here and Leeds is a very, very welcoming city."

"Everyone is welcome to our scene regardless of sexuality but we would like, as in Liverpool, to have our area recognised. We feel that it will benefit not only businesses in the area but also Leeds as a whole."

Manchester, Liverpool and London are well known for their gay districts.
