Singer and gay
equality activist Lady Gaga was victorious at the Gay and Lesbian
Alliance Against Defamation awards in New York, last weekend.
The chart-topping star - whose real name is
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta - was given the Ourstanding
Music award for her second LP Born This Way.
The 25 year-old performer was presented
with the accoldae in Manhattan, where the organisation hold their
annual ceremony to celebrate positive LGBT presences in the
media.
Dancing With The Stars won outstanding reality TV programme for
featuring contestant Chaz Bono - the first transgender person to
appear on the show.
The producers of TV musical series Smash also picked up the
acclaimed Vito Russo award.
Meanwhile, Katy Butler - the teenage girl who created an online
petition to re-classify a documentary film about gay bullying - was
also honoured at the ceremony.
Butler, who used petition site Change.org to garner 200,000
signatures for her fight against the R-rating of documentary Bully,
was presented with an award by Harvey Weinstein.
Glee stars Naya rivera and Cory Monteith
hosted the show, with a number of special guests including Dakota
Fanning and Dancing with the Stars' Carson Kressley.
Oprah Winfrey, The New York Times, The
Advocate and Anderson Cooper 360 were among the other winners
announced at the ceremony.
