According to the Washington Post, the blog's editor Paula Brooks is actually Bill Graber, a 58 year-old retired construction worker from Ohio who adopted his wife's identity online.

His real persona was revealed after his involvement with Amina Abdallah - McMaster's guise - was questioned over the weekend.

Lez Get Real had posted several of MacMaster's blogs on life and political unrest in Syria.

When reporters tried to interview 'Paula Brooks' over the phone regarding the Damascus story, she claimed via email that she was deaf and could only communicate via her father.

After numerous enquiries Graber admitted that he was actually Paula Brooks.

"I didn't start this with my name because... I thought people wouldn't take it seriously, me being a straight man," he told the Washington Post.

He also added that that he started the blog "with the best intentions" after seeing two friends of his - a lesbian couple - subjected to homophobia. He had also fought for the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

However, one of Lez Get Real's writers, Linda LaVictoire, has admitted she feels like a fool.

"I was completely taken in," she said. "I have been completely taken in for three years."
