The rally, which took place in the city's Hyde Park, coincided with the 2011 Australian Labour Party Conference.

Senator Sarah Hanson Young addressed the 10,000 crowd, as did Dr Kerryn Phelps, Shelley Argent of PFLAG, Rodney Croome, Labor MP Mark Butler, Sally McManus, senator Doug Cameron and Get Up's Simon Sheikhall.

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir also performed live.

Police estimate more than 5,000 people marched through the city from Hyde Park to the Australian Labor Party national conference in Darling Harbour.

According to NineMSN, several senior Labor figures, including Transport Minister Anthony Albanese and Senator Doug Cameron, both supporters of gay marriage, joined the crowd.

Meanwhile, lesbian Finance Minister Penny Wong delivered a petition to delegates at the ALP conference.
