American actress Glenn Close has been nominated for an Academy
Award for her performance in critically acclaimed film Albert
Nobbs.
She will compete against Meryl Streep, Rooney Mara, Viola Davis
and Michelle Williams for the title of Best Actress in a Leading
Role.
Based on a short story by Irish novelist George Moore, the film
features Close, 63, as an English woman who disguises herself as a
male butler to find work in 19th century Ireland.
"I believe in this story and its potential to take everyone on a
sensuous, funny, heart-breaking, wildly unexpected ride," she told
the Daily Mail.
Close first played the character of Albert Nobbs in a stage
production in 1982. Nearly two decades after this performance, she
began attempting to have the story produced into a film and
eventually succeeded.
The budget is a mere £6 million, however The Irish Film Board made
an additional contribution of 750,000.
The film, which was re-written by Close and John Banville, also
stars Jonothan Rhys Meyers, Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Johnson, Brendan
Gleeson, Pauline Collins and Brenda Fricker.
