The Bad Romance star appeared on stage as her male alter-ego, whom she has called Joe Calderone, smoking and ranting at the audience.

At first, celebrities including Britney Spears appeared bemused as to the identity of the person on stage, but later rejoiced when Gaga began to sing.

Moments later, she was joined on stage by Queen guitarist Brian May for a rousing performance. Watch the video below.

The singer, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, was nominated for - and won - the Best Female Video accolade for her smash-hit Born This Way.

Remaining in character for the entire show, Gaga's Calderone later presented Britney Spears with her lifetime achievement award and even accepting her own award "on behalf of Gaga."
