The news comes after elections took place all over the country
to elect local councils, assemblies and the Scottish Parliament,
last week.
The MSP - who represented Edinburgh West - lost her seat to the
SNP's Colin Keir with just 9,276 of the vote.
It was just one of several defeats for the party, who were
overshadowed by the Scottish National Party.
Liberal Democrat election chairman George Lyon told the
Associated Press that the coalition in Westminster had an impact on
the result.
"This has been really disappointing. We now have to listen and
reflect on what voters have told us. We also need to pay tribute to
the very good MSPs who will not be returning to Parliament."
Conversely, the Conservative Party now have their first
openly-lesbian Member of the Scottish Parliament, following the
recent election of Ruth Davidson.
The MSPs were sworn in on Wednesday.
