In July, veteran lesbian activist Jean Harris died at the age of 66. The influential campaigner was found dead at her Palm Springs home by her partner, Denise Penn.

The Orange County native was considered a political pioneer after helping gay candidates get elected in California - namely, two lesbians to the city's Board of Supervisors and a gay man to the school board in 1990.

The highly anticipated Channel 5 reality show Candy Bar Girls (pictured) aired this month, to a mixed response from fans and critics.

Some viewers took to the Internet to describe the show as "cringe worthy", "a total letdown" and "truly awful", yet viewing figures hailed it a success.

Revolving around the lives of a group of London-dwelling gay girls, the show was preceded by an eye-popping advertising campaign. The bar's staff also graced the cover of DIVA.

Singer Lady Gaga caused serious amusement during a press conference in Australia in July - by incorrectly assuming that Australian PM Julia Gillard is gay.

According to the Sydney Herald, the Born This Way star made the gaffe while responding to a question from host Tracy Grimshaw, who asked if she thought Gillard was hypocritical for living with her partner in The Lodge while banning same-sex marriage.
