In July, veteran lesbian activist Jean Harris died at the age of
66. The influential campaigner was found dead at her Palm Springs
home by her partner, Denise Penn.
The Orange County native was considered a political pioneer
after helping gay candidates get elected in California - namely,
two lesbians to the city's Board of Supervisors and a gay man to
the school board in 1990.
The highly anticipated Channel 5 reality show Candy Bar Girls
(pictured) aired this month, to a mixed response from fans and
critics.
Some viewers took to the Internet to describe the show as
"cringe worthy", "a total letdown" and "truly awful", yet viewing
figures hailed it a success.
Revolving around the lives of a group of London-dwelling gay
girls, the show was preceded by an eye-popping advertising
campaign. The bar's staff also graced the cover of DIVA.
Singer Lady Gaga caused serious amusement during a press
conference in Australia in July - by incorrectly assuming that
Australian PM Julia Gillard is gay.
According to the Sydney Herald, the Born This Way star made the
gaffe while responding to a question from host Tracy Grimshaw, who
asked if she thought Gillard was hypocritical for living with her
partner in The Lodge while banning same-sex marriage.
