Gay and lesbian couples will receive the same tax, inheritance and welfare rights as come with marriage, Swiss news agency ATS reported.

A total of 68.8 per cent of voters approved the law - which does include the right to adopt children - while 31.2 per cent voted against it.

The poll came after critics requested a Proposition 8-esque ballot.

"With this clear 'yes' to partnerships, Liechtenstein... is putting an end to the current discrimination faced by same-sex couples," ATS quoted Prime Minister Klaus Tschuetscher as saying.

Bordered by Switzerland to the west and Austria to the east, Liechtenstein is a double-landlocked country with an estimated population of 35,000.
