The 24-year-old surrendered herself on Thursday morning after opting not to go back to jail.

Lohan was originally sentenced to four months in jail for stealing a £1,500 necklace. However, prison overcrowding made her eligible for house arrest.

In addition to her sentence, the movie star must serve 480 hours of community service.

The Mean Girls star must spend the next 35 days at her home in Venice Beach, California, fitted with an electronic tag to ensure she doesn't leave her property.

Los Angeles Sheriff Department's spokesman Steve Whitmore, said: "She is now confined to the interior premises of her home at all times."

Lohan reportedly decided to start her house arrest early so that filming on her new film Gotti wasn't impacted on. She is due to star alongside John Travolta and Al Pacino in the movie.
