Streep wins BAFTA for role in Phyllida Lloyd's The Iron Lady

Meryl Streep was named Best Actress at London's annual BAFTA awards, yesterday.

She won the accolade for her role in Phyllida Lloyd's The Iron Lady, which stars Streep as former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

While collecting the award, Streep suffered her own Cinderella moment by losing her shoe.

Attracting elite actors and actresses from across the globe, the British Academy of Film and Dramatic Art awards are the highlight of the UK's film industry.

Silent film The Artist was the big winner of the night, sweeping the board - including Best Actor for Jean Dujardin.

The Iron Lady has been nominated for two categories in the 84th Academy Awards.

The acclaimed film has been shortlisted for best actress in a leading role whilst Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland have been nominated for the best makeup category.

The Iron Lady took the UK by storm on its opening weekend, taking over £2.1million.

Lloyd  remains one of the most successful openly-gay directors.
