New Jersey has become the latest American state to give same-sex
marriage the green light, this week.
In a 42-33 vote, the state's General Assembly voted in favour of
the measure after the Senate's approved it earlier this week.
However, celebrations have been dampened by the likelihood that a
veto will effectively stall it.
According to the Associated Foreign Press, Republican Governor
Chris Christie has pledged to veto it when he received it later
today.
Republican Christie (pictured) is a long-standing opponent of
gay and lesbian marriage, claiming it should be exclusively for
opposite-sex couples.
"I am not a fan of same-sex marriage," Christie said in a recent
television interview.
"It's not something that I support. I believe marriage should be
between one man and one woman. That's my view. And that'll be the
view of our state because I wouldn't sign a bill like the one that
was in New York."
So far, seven US states _ Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire, New York, Vermont and Washington - and the District of
Columbia have legalised gay marriage.
