The offices, which will be open in New York's five boroughs,
will see the city's first full same-sex marriages from 8.30am as
people receive their marriage licences.
The city expects multitudes of people to come forth from
out-of-state as well as from New York to marry their partners.
Due to the large turnout expected marriage offices will stay
open two hours later than usual in the following week.
A 24-hour
waiting period is usually in place after obtaining a licence before
people are allowed to marry but this can be waivered by a judge.
Mayor Bloomberg's office says that judges will be on hand to
consider couples' waiver requests and to perform the
marriages.
New York is also expecting more lesbians than gay men to marry
in their city as according to a recent study almost double the
amount of lesbians are marrying than gay men in US states where
same-sex marriage is legal.
