The politician released a campaign video on Tuesday which
announced her candidacy.
"I've made standing up for the middle class my top priority, and
I've never hesitated to speak my mind," she says in it.
If successful, she would be the first openly-gay U.S. Senator in
history.
"The fact is, I've been honest about my sexual orientation my
entire adult life. And integrity is important in public service,"
Baldwin said in an in an interview with US newspaper the Milwaukee
Journel Sentinel.
"But what voters are looking for is somebody who understands them,
is fighting for them and won't give up. The election is not going
to be about me, it's about the voters."
Baldwin's entrance into the Senate race leaves her Wisconsin House
seat open for the first time in more than a decade.
