Zanele Muholi: Faces and Phases - Until 1 August
Fred [London] Ltd 45 Vyner Street, London, E2 9DQ
opening hours: Wednesday - Sunday 12:00 - 18:00 or by appointment
Muholi’s photographs examine our relationship with the black female body. Shown in a frank and intimate way, she challenges the history of the way that black women’s bodies are both seen and perceived. Hers is an ongoing exploration in to the lives and politics of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Africans, and, specifically, the black lesbian women. Hers is an obsessive and honest visual diary that challenges social tolerance. She questions commonly held prejudices, by showing particularly intimate, and perhaps unfamiliar subjects. The work is beautifully tender and sensitive; sometimes playful, sometimes provocative, but always with integrity.
This exhibition, Muholi’s first solo show in London, comprises twenty-four Silver Gelatin prints, and represents a selection from a larger body of work.
Of the series, she writes:
In the face of all the challenges our community encounters daily, I embarked on a journey of visual activism to ensure that there is black queer visibility. It is important to mark, map and preserve our mo(ve)ments through visual histories for reference and posterity so that future generations will note that we were here.
In Faces and Phases I present our existence and resistance through positive imagery of black queers (especially lesbians) in South African society and beyond. I show our aesthetics through portraiture. Historically, portraits serve as memorable records for lovers, family and friends.
Faces express the person, and Phases signify the transition from one stage of sexuality or gender expression and experience to another. Faces is also about the face-to-face confrontation between myself as the photographer/activist and the many lesbians, women and transmen I have interacted with from different places. Photographs in this series traverse spaces from Gauteng and Cape Town to London and Toronto, and include the townships of Alexandra, Soweto, Vosloorus, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Katlehong and Kagiso.
Phases articulates the collective pain we as a community experience due to the loss of friends and acquaintances through disease and hate crimes. Some of those who participated in this visual project have already passed away. We fondly remember Buhle Msibi (2006), Busi Sigasa (2007), Nosizwe Cekiso (2009) and Penny Fish (2009): may they rest in peace. The portraits also celebrate friends and acquaintances who hold different positions and play many different roles within black queer communities - an actress, soccer players, a scholar, cultural activists, dancers, filmmakers, writers, photographers, human rights and gender activists, mothers, lovers, friends, sisters, brothers, daughters and sons.
“The viewer is invited to contemplate questions such as: what does an African lesbian look like? Is there a lesbian aesthetic or do we express our gendered, racialised and classed selves in rich and diverse ways? Is this lesbian more 'authentic' than that lesbian because she wears a tie and the other does not? Is this a man or a woman? Is this a transman? Can you identify a rape survivor by the clothes she wears?”

Wolfgang Tillmans: 26 June – 19 September, London
Known by the early 90s for the seemingly casual images of the world he inhabited, Tillmans’ work reassessed photographic conventions and reflected the identity politics of the time, capturing the fragility of human life and focusing on everyday objects. This early work then expanded to engage with portraiture, landscape, the still-life and, more recently, abstraction.
Tillmans’ abstract work, greatly celebrated in the last decade, continues to push the boundaries and definitions of the photographic form, and will be a particular focus of this exhibition.

Salt N Peppa PART 3: 30 JULY
11.30pm – 5am – The Long Room, Colosseum Car Park Entrance
SALT N PEPPA is certainly cutting the ice because all the fans are back loving this oldskool urban Rave organised by Brandy’s DeJaVu with legendary Gay Rave that used to be known as The Velvet Room in Tottenham Court Road back in the day the late 90s till 2002.
The retro ambience for Salt n Peppa is taking its cue from the Velvet Room which had a fantastic mix across the genres and styles. From Hiphop Soul to UK Garage, it’s all there, and the music sounds better with the big and warm sound system at the Long Room, which is at the back of Club Colosseum.
Music style is eclectic from Spiller to Shola Ama, Shabba to Tiger, Beverley Knight to Mary J Blige, Wideboys to Sunship, Snoop and JayZ, Biggy and Faith, Salt-n-Peppa to SWV, Left Eye to Aaliya. DJs Philly, Biggy C, Sugarbear, hyped by MCs Tyron & Brandy will be there to add their very special style. See attached flyer for more info.

Kazantip Republic: 31st July till 21st August 2010
Crimea, Ukraine
Kazantip-live
Kazantip Republic - Party Paradise in the Ukraine
Kazantip Republic is the biggest, longest, craziest, liveliest and most unusual electronic music event taking place on the beautiful Crimean Black Sea coast from 31st July to 21st August 2010. With 6 dancefloors, 30 bars and restaurants, 2 open air crimea halls, 3 kite stations and a huge number of various architectural constructions which you can't even imagine, Kazantip is an undiscovered party paradise.
First acts to be announced include; Carl Cox, Ricardo Villalobos, M.A.N.D.Y, Josh Wink, Stanton Warriors, Loco Dice, Marco Carola, Hybrid, Joel Mull, Meat Katie, Guy Gerber, Raresh, Freestylers, Fergie, Joel Xavier and many more including special events by Cocoon, Get Physical, Toolroom, Poker Flat, Global Underground, Freak'n Chik and many others.
More names
here.
Kazantip Republic has been going strong for 18 years and is a space where people can totally express themselves: DJs, musicians, producers, film makers, designers, performers, freaks, beautiful dancing girls and toned kitesurfing boys. Having been compared to Ibiza and Burning Man, Kazantip has a wide range of parties 24/7, art projects, and a community of crazy people set against the mind blowing back drop of a technicolour light show - it looks like a giant space ship at night.
But why Republic? Of course Kazantip is a mythical republic, which does not exist but it is independent and sovereign. It has its own basic laws, President, Government and citizens - creative freaky people who are tired of normal ordinary life.
And you may have never heard about this imaginary Republic until now, but Sven Vath, Dubfire, Timo Maas, Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren, Crystal Method, LTJ Bukem, Oliver Huntemann, Stephan Bodzin, Tigerskin, James Zabiela, Robert Babicz and hundreds more well-known artists perform at Kazantip every year.
ARTIST QUOTES:
"It was a great experience for me to perform at the Kazantip. I had heard a lot about the World's longest Techno party and I was not disappointed. A festival site that reminds of the props of a Mad Max movie, but much more colourful and friendly - and exactly that was also how the crowd was like and I was warmly welcomed with many gestures of friendship" Sven Vath
"Once in a lifetime experience!! KAZANTIP on Popovka beach Ukraine. Many people told me this is the best festival where you HAVE to go to... And I've seen it now myself. Believe the hype! You have to see this! Amazing!! Thank you Kazantip!" Armin Van Buuren

The Big Bum Jumble, where Fatshion in the UK takes an ethical turn
The Big Bum Jumble is landmark fatshion event selling low-cost second-hand and vintage clothes in sizes XL+. It will take place on 14 August 2010 in London's East End, and will comprise a traditional jumble sale, a catwalk show and other activities, as well as the chance to participate in a film of the event.
Kay Hyatt, its principle organiser, is a fat activist who often struggles to find clothes to fit. Knowing that other people were in the same position, she decided to do something about it after attending a similar event in the US. Kay explains: "I was impressed by the celebratory atmosphere, the friendliness, the sense of community and, of course, the excellent fashion. It was like jumping into a giant dressing-up box. I wanted to bring that feeling home.
Kay says: "Fashion can be creative and playful, it can help you feel really good about yourself. I think this should be available to everyone regardless of size or background." She adds: "Although The Big Bum Jumble is a sale, it's also anti-consumerist, all about reusing and recycling, and it has a DIY-culture ethic of making something out of the resources available to you."
"The situation is improving but, unless you can afford the high-end stuff, plus-sized fashion is often limited to poor quality, overpriced and ethically-dubious products sold by companies who see fat people as self-hating, desperate consumers. We deserve better."
Clean, plus-sized donations are welcome on the day, just bring them along. For larger amounts, please get in touch with the organisers if you need to arrange a pick-up.

BICON 2010: 26 - 30 August, London
The UK's largest ever bisexual event is scheduled to take place in August 2010, in London's Docklands. BiCon is an annual convention and conference for bisexual people and their partners, friends and supporters. Each year it brings together people from across the country and from abroad to share experiences and make new friends.
Each year, BiCon provides a safe space for bisexuals and their supporters to meet and enjoy each other's company, to be open and honest about their sexuality without fear of prejudice or misunderstanding. It is a welcoming and supportive event: BiCon is enjoyed each year by people who are just beginning to make links with the UK bisexual community, as well as by regular attendees who come back time and time again.
During the day it has a packed programme of talks, discussions and seminars about bisexuality and associated topics: everything from being out to your family or how to create a bi-friendly business, to creative workshops on bisexual bodies, or lighter fun and games sessions. In the evenings it has a range of social activities including parties, dancing and networking.
More details on the combined conference, including information on registration, is available online at

Have you ever wondered what secret tunnels and buildings are hidden under the city streets? An Invitation to explore the 'secret labyrinth’ beneath the streets of London, by torchlight. Take an illuminating art journey, through the history of subterranean London. The Exhibition, with over 50 artists, re-creates many of London’s underground secrets, with illuminating art, props and historical information on these hidden underground gems of our city. Find out the secret doors which unfold vast vaults and tunnels.
Illumini Event 2010 will be held in an underground rustic location in London, and promises to be an exciting and historical look into the history of the secret underground city. The old rustic subterranean dark labyrinth, with its many rooms, alleyways and cells, will be transformed by artists’ and prop makers into several areas of historical underground London, e.g: World War bunkers, disused stations, crypts, historical waterways and many more, the long-forgotten hidden secrets of London.
The event will start with a grand opening night with free entertainment; where everyone is welcome. Live acts: stilt walkers, light shows, magicians, illuminating dancers, tarot reading, travel back in time with historical costumed performers, and much more.
During the event there will be free workshops, talks and tours about secrets that are hidden in London’s underground by a number of special guests: from authors, historians and museums. There will also be talks on the occult history of London, and ghosts that explore the vaults at night. Click here for full details. Illumini also wanted to provide a free service to creative individuals, by offering free artist talks and creative workshops and has invited many well known art organisations to provide informative service at Illumini. Click here for more details
You can even take your own personal tour, by using a clever application for mobile phones designed by Illumini Artists’ Martin Rieser & collaborating artists Ximena Alarcon & Kasia Molga. 'Riverians' uses GPS and QR code reading. With this application, you can discover the hidden underground world which corresponds to real underground locations in Shoreditch – aligned with the sites of past events such as the Ripper murders – and then use the Riverain's overheard tales to map those sites and find clues and directions to others.

As part of Photomonth 2010 and Brighton Photo Fringe 2010, freelance photographer
Anastasia Trahanas is showcasing a series of colour and black and white images of naked people.
These images are portraits, which in collaboration with the photographer and the sitters - where there is no static formality of the positioning of the subject. The subjects select their location whether it is private, public, or intimate space, as well as having the option to select which image they would like to make public.
Naked Britain began early 2005, and as a British resident Anastasia intends to place the focal point of her subjects within Britain, hence ‘Naked Britain’. However she will be opening this project to other countries in the future – on her travels. As the time of the shoot is significant for her subjects, they will be showing themselves in chronological order.
This is a documenting project, which takes a look at ‘the self’ as a raw individual as well as their response to society. The representation of ‘the self’ is portrayed with an element of exposing their ‘identity’, and whilst being brought up in a western society where clothing is a part of our attire, the shedding of these garments symbolically adds to this element – as if it is a vital part of acceptance.
Naked Britain/Exposure was a natural progression, which evolved from her prior body of work ‘Photographing The Female’.
While Naked Britain has some parallels with this body of work, its main purpose is to disassociate the aestheticism of the naked body and put it into a discourse of individual expression.
Anastasia Trahanas has always had an interest in humanity within society whether she is photographing social documentary or fine art her concept tends to follow challenging boundaries within what society reflects as the so called ‘norm’. Her qualified background is ‘Photography, and an MA in Visual Anthropology’. She shoots in both colour and black and white…however leans more towards her passion for the black and white print.
