DVD: Skins - Season Three

(Reviewed by Rosie Blackwell-Sutton))

Season 3 of Skins saw the introduction of a whole new group of super-cool characters in what would prove to be one of the most controversial series of Skins yet.

Everything is different this time round apart from Effy (Kaya Scodelario), the only character to stick around from seasons 1 and 2. She is beginning life at Roundview College with a whole new gang for us to be acquainted with.

Already she is Queen Bee, with two boys, Cook (Jack O’Connell) and Freddie (Luke Pasqualino), vying for her affection in anyway possible in what looks set to be one of the most epic love-triangles in the show's history.

The two boys are part of ‘The Three Musketeers’ along with magician friend J.J (Ollie Barbieri) who suffers from a mild form of Aspergers Syndrome. Their seemingly solid friendship is torn apart with the arrival of Effy causing the boys to turn on each other.

New arrival Naomi (Lily Loveless) is a girl of much affection; Cook takes a liking to her whilst Emily (Kathryn Prescott), exploring her sexuality, becomes increasingly infatuated with her, constantly trying to win her over leaving us wondering if it will all be worth it.

Emily’s twin sister Katie (Megan Prescott), who bosses her sister about, takes an instant dislike of Effy; she’s jealous of her popularity and wants what she has which ends in an ultimate, drug-fuelled showdown in the woods, one of many episodes to border on the downright strange.

Other characters include Pandora (Lisa Blackwell), an extremely ditzy, often hilarious, girl who is (bizarrely) Effy’s best friend. She builds a relationship with Thomas (Merveille Lukeba), a new arrival from Congo who has to find a way to make some money for his struggling family whilst dealing with his landlord, local gangster Johnny White (Mackenzie Crook).

This series certainly isn’t short of the usual Skins ingredients. There’s plenty of sex, drugs, violence, great music and even a lesbian storyline to kick start our love affair with this new bunch of wild teens.

In order to get to grips with all the quirks of the new characters, the DVD provides many great extras including 4 new stories, video diaries and exclusive behind the scenes footage.
