THEATRE: Holding the Man

(Reviewed by Eden Carter Wood)

The posters for this production, which feature a prominent picture of Cath & Kim’s hugely popular Jane Turner are very slightly misleading; Turner plays a number of supporting roles in Holding the Man (very amusingly too) but the stars are undoubtedly Guy Edmonds’ Tim and Matt Zeremes’ John, long term partners whose relationship forms the core of the narrative.

The play, like any football match, is a game of two halves. The first half is romantic, sweet and often very funny; this is boy meets boy Downunder and, full of energy, the relationship between the two men sweeps you up. After the scrummage at the bar during the interval, the second half plays out under the shadow of HIV and is significantly darker, with an ending that packs a genuine emotional punch.

The minimalist set was used very creatively, and Trafalgar Studio's almost vertigo-inducing seating meant perfect views of all the action. Particularly impressive was the use of puppets, most notably at the play's close. Stunning.

Not just one for the boys, this is a true life story that is, ultimately, life-affirming. Highly recommended.

Holding the Man is on at Trafalgar Studios, London until July 3
