FOOD: Satsuma

(Reviewed by Eden Carter Wood)

I spent a couple of years living in Japan and love Japanese food more than any other, and I’m pleased to say that Satsuma has yet to disappoint me. Brilliantly located in the centre of Soho, it’s a great place to meet for dinner and a drink or two.

It’s one of those places where you’re seated on long benches, which is nice as you get to see what other people are eating and there's a nice busy feel without being imposed on. The staff are great, friendly and very efficient; if anything they are too attentive.

The food, of course, is the main thing, and it's here that Satsuma makes me especially happy. The Satsuma Bento is fantastic, with salmon and tuna sashimi, chicken yakitori, prawn katsu, vegetable roll and seafood salad. Another big favourite of mine is yakisoba, and this place does a great one. For those yet to try yakisoba, it is wok-fried Japanese style egg noodle dish garnished with fish powder, fried shallots and dry seaweed. At Satsuma a seafood yakisoba will cost you £8.00 and is absolutely perfect. Just writing that description has got me hungry again.

Green Tea ice cream and a superb Black & White Sesame ice cream (both £4.00) were a perfect, refreshing end to the meal. I’ll be back soon to try to the Ice Cream Tempura (deep-fried ice cream in light batter, served with chocolate and mango brandy sauce, according to the menu- sounds amazing!) as soon as I get a chance.
