BREATHABLE FOOD: Le Whif

(WORDS Eden Carter Wood)

Tired of eating and drinking but want to enjoy the delicious flavours of coffee and chocolate? Well, stop holding your breath: it’s here. Le Whif, the world’s first “breathable food” allows consumers to breathe in chocolate or coffee through their mouths from a lipstick-style tube inhaler. At last.

Le Whif contains hundreds of milligrams of tiny food particles. Each Le Whif is fully biodegradable, and allows for eight to ten puffs. "Le Whif is a new approach to eating, by breathing. With Le Whif, we inhale food, like chocolate, into our mouths and taste it, without chewing, to get an experience of flavour without a single calorie," Professor Edwards said. Who is Prof Edwards? Only the guy who invented Le Whif!

So how does it work, exactly? Professor Edwards kindly explained: “Le Whif uses particle engineering to form chocolate and coffee in microscopic sizes that are small enough to become airborne, though too large to enter the lungs.” Edwards combined his knowledge of aerosol science with the culinary arts by partnering with Michelin-rated French chef Thierry Marx to develop the Le Whif flavours.

More facts? Le Whif Chocolate delivers the taste of chocolate with less than one calorie, and Le Whif Coffee provides a caffeine dose equivalent to a small shot of espresso.

So, what’s it like? DIVA editor Jane Czyzselska gave two of these little beauties a try and had this to say.

“The coffee one is rather like inhaling a jar of powdered mocha that’s nearly finished,” she said. “I actually quite like it.”

And the chocolate variety? “This was better than the coffee one,” commented Czyzselska thoughtfully. “It was rather like chocolate sherbet and did satisfy my sweetness craving. But the packaging looks a bit weird,” she noted. “It looks a bit ‘rumpty’, like a cross between a toy cigar and an asthma inhaler.”

In conclusion, Czyzselska said, the packaging was terrible, it was a weird idea, but the actual whiff is OK. “Good for compulsive sugar addicts who are trying to avoid the real thing,” she said.

Available in four flavours (chocolate, raspberry chocolate, mint chocolate and coffee), Le Whif is available now from selected House of Fraser stores nationwide or from www.lewhif.com.

£1.99 for a single and £4.99 for a three pack
