BEAUTY: For Real Divas

Amy Nathan reviews StarGazer's bold new Diva Collection.)

Most lipsticks, in my experience, have a creamy texture that, admittedly, does make for easy application, but results in the stick snapping/bending/melting/smudging (delete as applicable). StarGazer lipstick is almost exactly the reverse. I could carry it in my purse without fear of discovering a melted puddle of wax upon extraction, and it’s not liable to smear all over the casing. Unfortunately, this means that the colour isn’t as bold as some other lipsticks, and several layers are required. As for the colour itself, the frosted tones will suit only a lucky few, with the colours being either too pale (as is the case with ‘Candy Pink’) or too yellow (like the pale gold ‘Luxe’) for the majority. Still, if you are a member of that happy minority, these lipsticks are only £3 per tube, and more than live up to the collection’s name ‘Diva’.

Without a doubt, the best thing about StarGazer nail polish is the colour. Each shade is bolder and more vibrant than the last, and there’s a veritable cornucopia to chose from, ranging from bright, futuristic silver called ‘Silver Siren’ and 70s glam purple known as ‘Etta’ to the delicious ‘Jezebel’, a deep indigo that glitters like the night sky. It also dries very quickly – I applied a second coat just two minutes ago and am now typing without fear of chipping, a very useful property as, unfortunately, several coats are definitely required. The polish has a watery consistency that renders the colour insipid upon first application. At least two coats are required for anything more than a lightly tinted shimmer, and the same again to achieve the desired hue. However, at a mere £2 each it’s well worth it. The polish is so resistant to wear and the colour so brilliant that it’s undisputedly one of the best polishes I’ve ever used.

StarGazer Diva Collection eye shadows are aptly named ‘Glitter Eye Dust’, coming as they do in a loose powder that will explode upon opening. I highly recommend unscrewing the lid over a sink or at the very least putting down some newspaper. The glitter possesses the same mystical properties as sand, and will be found in the most unexpected places several weeks after use. Putting that aside, the colours are intense, vibrant and really quite exciting. Think the shadow is black? Think again. With the seeming black ‘Dazzle’, every speck of glitter gleams a different hue under different lights, resulting in a glittering wonderland guaranteed to catch the eye. Black too dark? ‘Yellow Gold’ is a pale, almost pastel gold shadow that will look brilliant on darker skin tones, costing only £3. Impractical, yes, but utterly brilliant.
